SIMetrix Basics Tutorial

Simetrix is a very powerful circuit simulation software for electronic circuits design. I use it a lot and is very helpful and most all you can get it for free. The free version has circuit size limitations but still adequate for most hobbyist designs.

An schematic window will appear.

To add device, just click on the any symbol buttons at the top and click on the sheet where you want to place the device. You can use the keyboard shortcuts below:

Useful Simetrix keyboard shortcuts:

w – waveform generator
e – voltage controlled voltage source
y – terminal
u – current probe
i – current sourcef – current controlled current source
g – ground
h – module port

v – voltage source
b – voltage probe

r – resistor
o – op amp
z – zener
c – capacitor
n – npn transistor
m – N channel MOSFET
j – N-channel JFET
l – inductor
p – PNP transistor
s – switch
d – diode
t – tranformer

F5 – Rotate
F9 – Run simulation

Example Simulation – AC analysis

Below is the circuit that I discussed on my post “Bass boost circuit design”.  Create this circuit for simulation. Type “o” to add op-amp, type “r” to add a resistor, type “c” to add a capacitor, “g” to add ground and “v” to add the voltage source. To edit the value of the components, just double click on the components you want to edit. To add the signal source click on the tab at top “Place – >  Voltage sources -> AC source(for AC analysis).

If you already have copy the circuit  below then we are ready to run the simulation. Type “b” to add a probe, place it on the output of the op-amp. Click “Simulator -> Choose Analysis”. The window below should appear:

Check “AC'” on the analysis mode. Click on the AC tab and edit the start and stop frequency. Click Ok or Run. You can also press F9 to run the simulation.
